Women Filmmakers Call Out Unfair Funding! Sadat & Maksimović Speak Up in Tokyo.

Shahrbanoo Sadat and Jelena Maksimović speaking at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
  • Why women directors face big challenges
  • When the unfairness really starts
  • Our take on helping women’s voices shine

We just heard some powerful words from Tokyo! Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat and Jelena Maksimović are calling it like it is. They’re talking about something super important for women in film.

It’s about money. Or, well, the lack of it for women. Sadat shared this at a Tokyo International Film Festival talk. She said women are at a huge disadvantage from the get-go.

Why? She believes it’s because the folks who control the money just don’t understand. They have an ignorance about it. And that lack of understanding? It keeps women directors from telling their stories.

Sadat put it plainly. “The discrimination did not start at the festival,” she stressed. Not at all. It starts way, way earlier.

She means it begins at the “development level.” That’s when film ideas are just starting to bloom. Before a single scene is shot. Before any beautiful visual concepts come to life. The whole aesthetic of what cinema could be is limited from the start when only certain voices get funded.

This isn’t fair. It just isn’t. Women have so many amazing stories to tell. So many unique ways to see the world. We need to hear them. Just like when Jakarta World Cinema says ‘Welcome Back!’ to global films, it reminds us how important it is to embrace all kinds of voices.

Our Take

We at BuzzMedia think this is a huge deal. It’s like painting a picture but only using half the colors. How can we truly appreciate the art of film if we’re missing so many brilliant perspectives? It’s time for the institutions to wake up. Really wake up. Let’s make sure every story gets a fair shot. And every director gets a chance to shine, no matter who they are.
