A New Freddy Movie Is Coming (And It’s Actually Kind Of Sweet?)

A clumsy animated boy looking unlucky in a spooky setting
  • The Predator: Badlands director is making a cartoon.
  • Freddy Vanwinkle is the world’s unluckiest son.
  • Paramount promises laughs instead of screams.

We just saw the coolest update from Paramount. Remember Dan Trachtenberg? He is the guy who gave us the intense world of Predator: Badlands. Now, he is trading scary aliens for something much softer.

The movie is called Freddy the 13th. It is an animated film based on a graphic horror novel. But don’t let the name scare you. It’s not a slasher flick. It’s a comedy!

It follows a boy named Freddy Vanwinkle. He is the 13th son in his family. Because of that, he is super unlucky. He fails at everything he tries. Poor guy!

The studio says this will be a wholesome, PG-rated story. We think it sounds adorable. It’s a nice break from all the talk about Argentina FC and Messi’s missed penalty.

As art school grads, Sucheta and I are obsessed with the vibe. We imagine a spooky-cute aesthetic. Think dark ink lines mixed with soft, glowy colors. It’s a very specific look that we love.

The movie feels like it will have a huge heart. It reminds us of Ranbir Kapoor’s sweet gesture for Alia Bhatt lately. Just pure and kind. We love seeing directors try something totally new.

Just like Sunny Deol’s sweet post about his dad, this film is all about family. Even if that family is a bit weird. We are ready for some laughs.

Our Take

We think this is a brilliant move. Usually, Freddy names mean nightmares. But making a clumsy hero funny? That’s fresh. It’s like how the best art breaks the rules.
