Matka King review: Vijay Varma hits the jackpot, but this templated Nagraj Manjule show never places a risky bet

We checked out ‘Matka King’ starring Vijay Varma and found his performance shines, but the show itself plays it a bit too safe.

  • Vijay Varma’s performance
  • Nagraj Manjule’s direction
  • The show’s overall feel

We just caught the first few episodes of Matka King, and guess what? Vijay Varma is absolutely killing it! He plays the lead in this show about how the matka lottery game really took off in India. Think of it as a whole saga, spread out over eight episodes. Vijay really brings his A-game, making you believe every step of his character’s journey.

But here’s the thing, and this is where we felt a bit let down. The show, directed by Nagraj Manjule, feels a little too… predictable. It’s like they had a recipe and stuck to it, you know? We were hoping for some surprising twists, some moments that made us gasp. But it never really takes a big swing. The overall vibe is a bit too polished, almost too clean for the gritty world it’s trying to show.

Visually, it’s nice. The ‘aesthetic’ is there, with some cool shots and a good feel for the era. But when a show is about the rise of something as chaotic and exciting as matka, you expect a bit more rawness. It’s a good watch, don’t get us wrong, especially for Vijay Varma. But it could have been so much more. It missed a few chances to really be special.

Our Take

Vijay Varma is fantastic, no doubt. He’s the real star here. However, we feel the show itself is a bit too by-the-numbers. It plays it too safe, and we wished for a bit more boldness from director Nagraj Manjule. It’s a solid series, but it doesn’t quite hit the jackpot it could have.
