Mandalorian VFX: Hal Hickel Asks ‘What Would Phil Do?’ (Hint: It’s Not James Bond!)
- Phil Tippett’s awesome influence on Grogu and Mando!
- Jon Favreau’s ‘less serious, more wild’ movie vibe.
- Rotta the Huttlet gets a fresh look.
We just heard some seriously cool news from behind the scenes of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’! It turns out, Industrial Light & Magic’s animation supervisor, Hal Hickel, had a secret weapon for bringing our favorite duo to life. His guiding question? “What would Phil do?”
Phil is none other than stop-motion legend Phil Tippett. This guy basically wrote the rulebook for how things moved in the original ‘Star Wars’ movies. Remember those huge AT-AT walkers? Or that super cool battle? Yep, that was his magic.
Hickel wanted to tap into that practical, almost handmade feel. That classic ‘Star Wars’ aesthetic. It just feels right, doesn’t it?
And get this: Jon Favreau, the brain behind it all, had a very specific vision. He wanted the movie to be “Less James Bond, More Jackass.” Yes, you read that right!
Think about that visual style. Not slick and polished, but a bit more gritty. A bit more surprising and maybe even clumsy in a fun way. It gives the whole thing a distinct vibe, very different from your usual big-budget action flick.
They even gave Rotta, Jabba’s not-so-cute son, a whole new design. Always keeping things fresh! Speaking of setting boundaries and specific approaches, we’re reminded of how serious things got with Kim Soo Hyun’s Agency lately. Sometimes, you just gotta draw a line!
Or maybe it’s like when you think you know a creator’s vibe, then BAM! A surprise drops. Kinda like our Nathan Fielder docu-mystery. You never quite know what you’re going to get!
Sometimes, even great plans can take a turn. A good start can lead to… well, a ‘whoops’ moment, as we talked about in our Nayyi Navelli review. But for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ it sounds like these wild ideas are perfectly on track.
Our Take
We at BuzzMedia are totally here for this approach! Using old-school stop-motion inspiration? Brilliant. Giving it a “Jackass” edge? Even better. It speaks to that raw, creative energy our co-founders, Sucheta and Arti, would absolutely appreciate. It’s all about the art, even when it’s a bit rough around the edges. This kind of vision makes us even more excited to see ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ hit the big screen. It promises to be a visual treat, full of personality and unexpected laughs. We can’t wait!
