Is the Magic of Movie Theaters Starting to Fade?
- The numbers are officially in.
- Cinema attendance is down across Europe.
- Are we falling out of love with the big screen?
We just saw the latest report from the International Union of Cinemas and it’s a bit of a bummer. Admissions across Europe dropped by 4.4% in 2025. That is 873.2 million tickets sold. Ouch.
Box office revenue didn’t tank quite as hard, falling just 1.2% to €6.9 billion. Still, seeing empty seats in such a beautiful, dark cinema room feels wrong. The vibe just isn’t the same when you’re scrolling on your couch instead of looking up at the silver screen.
Some countries are doing better than others, though. It really depends on where you live. While we figure out why this is happening, maybe check out how 10 Women Filmmakers Just Got a Big Break and We Love the Vibe to keep your spirits high.
Our Take
We think the magic is still there, but it needs a refresh. Watching a film at home is easy, but it lacks the aesthetic of a crowded, buzzing lobby and that specific scent of buttered popcorn. We aren’t ready to say goodbye to the theater experience just yet. Speaking of big shifts, did you see Big News: Liam Payne’s 9-Year-Old Son Inherits EVERYTHING!? Life moves fast, just like the film industry.
