You won’t believe the cool news we just heard from the movie world! Shelly Johnson, the incredible Director of Photography (that’s the DP, the person in charge of how a movie looks!), has just been elected the 50th President of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Fifty! That’s a lot of presidents!
Big deal. Huge. If you’ve ever watched a movie and thought, ‘Wow, that shot looks amazing!’ or ‘The colors here are just perfect!’ – you’re seeing the magic of a DP at work. Shelly Johnson is the genius behind the camera for films like the intense war movie ‘Greyhound’ and the wild ‘Jurassic Park III.’
Think about the gritty, realistic vibe of ‘Greyhound,’ out there on the rough seas. Or the thrilling, adventurous aesthetic of ‘Jurassic Park III’ with those incredible dinosaurs. His eye for how a movie feels is just incredible. He makes you feel like you’re right there, experiencing everything.
The ASC is a super important group of the best DPs in the business. It’s like the hall of fame for camera wizards. Shelly isn’t new to this top spot; he actually led the organization before, from 2023-25. So, he’s back at the helm, taking over from Mandy Walker, who did an amazing job.
