  • A look back at Tim Ryan’s amazing career.
  • How he helped us see Hawaii’s entertainment scene.
  • Our thoughts on his lasting impact.

We just heard some sad news. Tim Ryan, a name familiar to anyone who loves Hawaii’s movies and TV, passed away. He was 80 years old.

Tim covered the islands’ entertainment scene for Variety and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for years. Imagine all those vibrant stories he told, painting pictures of paradise with his words. He really captured the sunny, energetic vibe of Hawaii’s film shoots.

From 1984 to 2006, he was the senior entertainment writer for the Star-Bulletin. That’s a long time! He saw so much unfold in the industry. Think about how movies have changed since then! Brie Larson’s New Horror Movie Just Got Way More Interesting! shows how wild things can get.

He reported on all the big productions filming there. All the local happenings too. His reporting helped us feel closer to the stars and the magic. It reminds us of how much we love seeing our favorite actors, like Millie Bobby Brown and Tom Cruise – who are apparently ‘Dear Friends’! This Is Wild!

He died on June 20th in West Seattle, Washington. After a long illness. What a life of storytelling. What a legacy.

Even though it’s sad news, we remember the bright, colorful stories he shared. Like a beautiful, evolving movie montage. His words were always so clear, so visual. He had an artist’s touch, even with words. It’s a different world now, with so many new stories coming out, like Akshay Kumar’s Welcome 3 Is Here! But Does It Have The Magic?

Our Take

It’s always tough to say goodbye to someone who shaped how we see the world. Tim Ryan did just that for Hawaii’s entertainment. He made you feel like you were right there on set. His dedication to sharing those stories, with that laid-back but always sharp Honolulu style, was truly special. We’ll miss his unique eye on the islands.
