We just watched “Spa Weekend” and, well, it got us thinking. Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher are in it! Big names, right?
The movie is one of those “high-concept” comedies. You know the type. The whole plot is basically in the title. It has that vibe. That “Look at me, I’m crass and dumb and obvious!” aesthetic. And usually, that’s why we like them.
But after seeing this one, we’re wondering if that kind of movie is… well, getting a bit old. The reviewer even called it a “twilight zone” for the genre. Yikes.
It felt like the comic highs just weren’t there. We love Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher. They are usually fantastic! It just made us think about what we expect from comedies these days. Is “dumb and obvious” not enough anymore?
It’s interesting to see what other stars are up to. Like, remember when Bruce Campbell said he was done being Ash Williams? That was a big change! Or Anna Faris having those really deep talks with her son about religion? Talk about switching things up!
Even Meghan Markle might be back on our screens with Netflix buzz! Everyone seems to be trying new things. Maybe comedies need to try new things too?
Our Take
We think it’s time for something fresh. Comedies can be smart, too. They don’t have to shout “I’m crass!” to get a laugh.
Maybe the visual style needs an upgrade. Or the jokes just need a new twist. We’re ready for it. It doesn’t mean we don’t love a good silly movie. But maybe the era of *only* being silly is ending.
