Why the Director of Netflix’s New Cinderella Movie Is Shunning Theaters

An artist's palette with soft colors representing the film's aesthetic.
  • Why Director John Ripa loves streaming
  • The benefits of skipping the big screen
  • Why the visual ‘vibe’ matters for this film

We just saw some interesting news about the new Cinderella reimagining called Steps. Usually, big directors want their movies in theaters. They want the popcorn and the giant screens. But John Ripa is saying something totally different.

He actually welcomes Netflix’s choice to go straight to streaming. No red carpets. No lines. Just a direct link to your living room. He thinks there are massive benefits to this move.

Being art school grads, we always look at the aesthetic. This movie has a very specific visual style. Think soft colors. Dreamy shapes. It feels like a cozy night in. The ‘vibe’ is perfect for a small screen where you can really see the details.

Sometimes big theaters can be overwhelming. Some stories feel better when they are personal. Speaking of personal, Tamannaah just dropped some truth bombs about the gaze in cinema lately. It is all about how we view the art.

Not every movie journey is happy, though. We recently wrote about how a Jane Austen film failed and the crew went unpaid. That was a mess. It makes sense why Ripa is happy to have a stable home at Netflix.

If you want something a bit more gritty than a fairy tale, Kunal Kemmu’s new show Alliance looks intense in its first trailer. It is great to see so many options popping up on our screens lately.

Our Take

We think this is a smart move. Animation often looks better when you can pause and look at the art. We love the idea of a ‘comfy’ movie. Theaters are great, but your couch is better. We can’t wait to see the colors pop on our own TVs.
