  • Two Oscar hopefuls from Asia.
  • A major film festival in Tokyo.
  • A famous actor on the jury!

We just saw something super exciting pop up on our feed! Our eyes practically popped out. Two amazing films, one from Thailand and one from Nepal, are making big waves. They’re actually their countries’ picks for the Oscars!

Thailand’s entry is called “9 Temples to Heaven.” We bet it’s visually stunning, maybe with those rich, deep colors you see in beautiful temples. Then there’s Nepal’s “Elephants in the Fog.” That title alone paints a picture, right? We’re imagining a really atmospheric vibe, maybe soft greens and grays, something really immersive.

These two fantastic movies are heading straight to the Tokyo Filmex competition. It’s the 27th time this cool festival is happening! Mark your calendars: November 20th to 29th, all happening in Tokyo’s lively Yurakucho district.

And get this: Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng is joining the jury! If you know films, you know him. He’s been in basically every feature by the amazing director Tsai Ming-liang, like “Rebels of the […]” from way back. Tsai Ming-liang’s films always have such a distinct visual style, often quiet but powerfully aesthetic. Lee Kang-sheng definitely knows his stuff when it comes to a movie’s look and feel!

Our Take

We are so ready for this. It’s awesome to see films from Thailand and Nepal getting this kind of spotlight. Tokyo Filmex sounds like the place to be for incredible visual stories. We can’t wait to hear what Lee Kang-sheng thinks. What a lineup!
